Everybody Has a Story to Tell: Getting Past "Stuck" With Cranial Sacral Therapy

All of us have at some time or other been overwhelmed by difficult or traumatic experiences, whether physical or emotional. Our body deals with the trauma in the best way it can through the development of patterns which shape itself around these experiences. For example, simple accidents such as a bad fall or blow may leave a residue pattern or compression in the tissues. Emotional stresses such as relationship break ups, moving home, and changing jobs can overwhelm your nervous system and leave unresolved shock inside your body. Anything unresolved in your body continues to activate the fight-flight behaviour of your nervous system which can lead to a pattern of tension and pain.Cranial Sacral therapy approaches the body by listening to how it expresses itself at the present moment. The therapist, by resting her hands gently on the body, may detect many different levels of pattern. These can be felt as muscle tension, fascial compression, connective tissue twists and pulls, or an imbalance or weakness in the cranial rhythm. It is the non-invasive and gentle nature of Cranial Sacral Therapy that enables the tissues to tell their own story.Receiving a Cranial Sacral treatment enables the brain to go into "neutral". Quieting the mind invites the healing intelligence in your brain to come forth. Instead of struggle and fear and suppression there is a deep peace and a surrender to the natural wisdom in you to heal. When the mind is in neutral it is not sending reactive signals to the body that tighten the muscles. The body can let go of pressure and can take in deeper breaths, bringing more oxygen and cleansing to the cells. Alarm mode messengers such as adrenaline, cortisol and histamine can be effectively eliminated from the body. Many symptoms such as swelling, infections, inflammation, headaches, high blood pressure, nerve pain, fatigue and low immune system can be traced back to an abundance of these reactive chemical messengers.

The process of unwinding occurs as the patterns of restriction are listened to and recognized. The cranial rhythm rises and resonates in vibration with the awareness of the traumatic experience. The release of trauma patterns may be experienced in many ways, such as sensations of tingling, pulsation or heat or emotional release. The therapist recognizes the wisdom of the body in organizing itself around trauma, so does not force anyone into processing these restrictions before they are ready. Instead, much of the work is concerned with building up internal resources, so that healing can take place with respect to the body's own timing and journey. The beauty of the body is that it is designed to free up pressures when it feels safe to do so. Cranial Sacral therapy can loosen up a tight sacrum and mobilize your pelvis and hips. The pelvis area, involved in birth, creation, stability and elimination, is an important area to health and well-being. If there is trauma to this area there may be restriction in nerves and blood vessels which are responsible for the flow of nutrients in and the flow of cellular waste products out. There are often restrictions that link the pelvis area through the dural membrane along the spine to the cranium. The bones of the cranium work in pairs and have a gentle rhythm that unlatches tension much like the hinges on a door. The cranial fluid moves rhythmically around the brain and spinal cord bringing proper nerve communication and cleansing to every cell. This is why Cranial Sacral therapy is so effective for relief from headaches and jaw pain and tension. When tension is released from the body, there is more flexibility in the musculature, less inflammation, improved immune function, more endorphins, more energy and clarity of thought.
